STUDENT ETUDES COMPETITION
 
Student Etudes Competition presents etudes selected from submissions sent by film schools from all over the world. The competitive films will be judged by an international Jury comprised of the recognized personages of film industry:
  • Sir Alan Parker - Jury President (director - Pink Floyd The Wall, Evita, Harry Angel, Birdy)
  • Don Burgess (cinematographer - The Book of Eli, Forrest Gump, Contact)
  • Don McAlpine (cinematographer - Tempest, Moulin Rouge)
  • Lilly Kilvert (production designer - Legends of the Fall,The Last Samurai, The Siege)
  • Lorenzo Codelli (film critic, advisor at Cannes festival and author)
  • Allen Hughes (director, producer - Menace II Society, Out of Hell, Dead Presidents)
  • Michael Seresin (cinematographer - Angela's Ashes, Mercury Rising, Birdy)
  • Oliver Stapleton (cinematographer - Absolute Beginners, Buffalo Soldiers)
  • Paweł Pawlikowski (director - From Moscow to Pietushki, Last Resort, Stringer)
Students receive the Golden Tadpole for the best cinematography. This award is called The Laszlo Kovacs Student Award, in memory of late Laszlo Kovacs.

The screenings of the student etudes will be traditionally held on Wednesday (December 2nd).

Sara loves her wife Katarina. She's making a surprise for her birthday. Katarina has a surprise for Sara as well. Sara has to handle the unexpected news, while taking care of the birthday party. Her joy is mended with growing feelings of isolation and frustration.





BLACK MOUNTAIN

They both work in the factory. They meet during the break in front of the black mountain and spend some time together. One day he doesn’t show up and all her fears materialize into a dark, industrial tunnel.

The brothers Oli and Jan are confronted with the absence of their parents. While the younger of the two withdraws into his own world, the older tries to make up for what is missing. They cope with the daily routine – a lonesome twosome.

Alone in Los Angeles, Enrique doesn't speak a word of English. Forced to work as a day laborer to earn money for loved ones back home, his loyalties are put to the test when a simple job escalates into a matter of life and death.





DESERT TRAINS

Shuli dreams of life in another place, maybe Tel Aviv. In the meantime she lives in a god-forsaken desert town and works in a spring factory. An unexpected twist in the relationships and Shuli might see her dreams come true.

A sound engineer named Piotr suffers from a rare condition, Tourette’s syndrome, manifesting itself in a compulsion to shout profanities or invectives, among others. A tragicomic tale spun around a battle with one's own limitations in order to find communion in a relationship with another man.

LOVE

PANI MUCHOMOR

It is an abstract story of the Professor, an expert on colour, who guides us into the world of his beloved Miss Mushroom. As we follow Miss Mushroom, it turns out that a playful, dark figure present around her is a manifestation of the Professor, which unfortunately ends tragically for him.

Pelagius left. When he was going through the courtyard, full of noise from the nearby factory, he noticed that there is something in the middle of courtyard. Something was moving in the mud... Something like a huge bird. When he came closer he saw something extraordinary . In a quagmire of feathers and mud, there was an old man that was clumsily trying to get up…

Would he be willing to pay the price for a possible chance of human contact?

Two women meet and three lives will be changed forever. Maja is 17. Still a child, but at the same time already the mother of a 6-month-old baby. The two of them live at a reformatory institute together. Maja is simultaneously fighting against her role as a mother and her desire for freedom. Her story comes to a turning point when she gets to know her new educator, Rózsa.
