The workshops of the Plus Camerimage Film Festival are organized in cooperation with Opus Film Studio



Plus Camerimage Festival is not only about screenings of outstanding films but also about numerous meetings, workshops and seminars. This year the workshops are organized mainly with the support of Arri and Panavision. The accredited guests will have an opportunity to attend the cinematography workshops led by Pierre Lhomme, the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Dante Spinotti, Roger Deakins and Amy Vincent. The editing workshops are promising very interesting. They are organized in cooperation with Łódź Film School and will be led by worl-acclaimed editors: Pietro Scalia, Steven Rosenblum and Mathilde Bonnefoy as well as Krzysztof Szpetmański and Leszek Starzyński.





ARRI WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS



  • FROM DOCUMENTARY TO DRAMA
    Lighting workshop led by cinematographer Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC (No Country for Old Men, A Beautiful Mind, Kundun, The Shawshank Redemption)
    Opus Film Studio, Monday, December 1st, 1 pm
    Roger Deakins started shooting documentaries and has brought a lot from that genre into his lighting on feature films. The simplicity of approach necessary in documentary shooting has served him well in feature lighting. Roger believes in the "Less is More" approach and will demonstrate this principal during this workshop using Arri lightning equipment.

  • 16MM CAMERA WORKSHOP
    Cinematography workshop led by cinematographer Amy Vincent ( (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan, Eulogy for Jack)
    Opus Film Studio, Friday, December 5th, 1 pm
    Continuous advances in lenses, film stock and postproduction technologies have elevated the Super 16 film format to new levels of image quality and production efficiency. Super 16 is now routinely used for standard and high definition television productions, feature films, commercials and documentaries, and with stunning results. During the workshop Amy Vincent will present the possibilities resulting from the use of Arri 16SR camera.


  • WHY THE CHIP ON YOUR SHOULDER?
    Arriflex D-21 Panel Discussion
    Seminar Room in the Grand Theatre, Friday, December 5th, 7.15 pm
    ARRI will be bringing together a panel of professional cinematographers and camera assistants to discuss their use of the ARRIFLEX D-21 digital camera system on a variety of productions, from commercials and TV dramas to feature films.
    Panel members will share what they have learned about how to get the best out of the D-21, screen examples of their work and discuss how different formats suit different productions. Bill Lovell, Head of ARRI Media’s Digital Department, will lead the discussion and questions will be taken from the floor.

  • CINEMATOGRAPHY WORKSHOP LED BY DANTE SPINOTTI, ASC, AIC

    He is a renown and award winning cinematographer, whose achievements with the camera are a result of repeated work with world’s best directors. Spinotti was born in Tolmezzo, Italy. His debut was Michael Mann’s American movie Manhunter, based on Thomas Harris’s novel “Red Dragon". Spinotti was nominated to the ASC Award three times, for L.A. Confidential, The Insider and The Last of the Mohicans. He was also nominated to Oscar and BAFTA Award for Curtis Hanson’s L.A. Confidential. He worked with Hanson on Wonder Boys starring Michael Douglas. For one of Mann’s last movies, The Insider, he was nominated to Oscar for the second time. With Mann he worked also on Heat and The Last of the Mohicans, awarded with BAFTA. Spinotti also worked on numerous projects with such renown directors as Garry Marshall, Michael Apted, Roland Joffe and Giuseppe Tornatore.
    The organizers invite to the special screening of The Last of the Mohicans photographed by Dante Spinotti. The screening will take place on Monday 1st December at 5.15 pm in the Grand Theatre. The print to be used for this purpose is a newly restored 35mm print particularly for this purpose.

  • PIERRE LHOMME MASTER CLASS
    Tuesday, December 2nd, 2:30 - 5:00 pm
    Pierre Lhomme is a leading director of photography whose work has helped to define four decades of French cinema. A set of excerpts from Lhomme’s films will be the starting point for a wide-ranging discussion about cinematography with Bruno Delbonnel, a leading director of photography in the current cinema. The main theme of the event will be a constant wish to work with ever-changing natural light. (The Master Class will be held in English)
    Moderated by Benjamin B,European correspondent of American Cinematogrpher.
    As a tribute to Pierre Lhomme, the recepient of Lifetime Achievement Award 2008, we will present a review of the films with his cinematography. On Monday 1st December at 10.15pm in the Grand Theatre a special screening of the newly restored print of The Army of Shadows will be held.

  • WORKSHOP WITH AFC CINEMATOGRAPHERS
    Opus Film Studio, Thursday, December 4th, 2:30 - 5:00 pm
    French cinematographers: Eric Guichard, Robert Alazraki, Marc Koninckx, supported by Rémy Chevrin, AFC President, will conduct a workshop called "Faces in the Dark"

  • INDUSTRY LAUNCH OF THE IMAGE FORUM
    ŁDK Cinema, Wednesday, December 3rd, 1 pm
    Panel discussion marking the industry launch of The Image Forum.
    The Image Forum is an association of representatives from a broad range of film industry companies and professions; its function is to address issues relating to the image quality of British and international film and television productions. Members of the forum come together in the belief that the entire industry would benefit from a greater degree of clarity on various technical subjects. Delegates from key organisations such as The European Federation of Cinematographers (Imago), the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) , the Production Guild and the Guild of British Camera Technicians (GBCT) are among those on the membership roster.
    Panel members President of the BSC, Sue Gibson, BSC; Gavin Finney, BSC; Paul Collard of Ascent Media; Jeff Allen of Panavision and Thierry Perronet of Kodak will voice their shared concerns about widespread hype and misinformation regarding acquisition formats. The discussion will focus on how to encourage informed choices and the importance of giving creative professionals the freedom to select tools appropriate for each individual project. Participants will talk about these issues from their particular perspective and also take questions from the audience.
